Preparation Is The Key to Perfection
A floor is only as good as its shear key to the concrete so that’s why we have all the equipment that’s needed to make sure your floor is stuck. Grinders, blasters and sacrifices are all vacuum ducted so there is little to no dust. We also know that in some instances the old needs to come up in order to install the new. So, if required we can remove your old floor and prepare to the point that it’s ready for the new. However, in saying that, there’s a high chance that your old floor might not need to be removed thereby allowing us to go over it and subsequently saving you both time and money.
Preparing your floor for an epoxy surface is a crucial step to ensure the longevity and durability of the finish. Proper preparation ensures that the epoxy adheres well and provides a smooth, durable surface. Here’s a guide to the process:
Evaluate the Surface Condition
- Check for Moisture
: Moisture is the enemy of epoxy. To test we will use a moisture meter to check for any moisture accumulation. If moisture is present, we will assess whether additional steps like sealing may be required.
- Assess the Surface: Inspect the floor for any cracks, chips, or holes. All imperfections need to be repaired before applying the epoxy.
Clean the Floor Thoroughly
- Remove All Dirt and Debris: This is the first step to cleaning where we will sweep or vacuum the floor to remove any dust, dirt, or debris.
- Degrease the Floor: Following the removal of dust and debris we then use a degreasing solution to clean any oil, grease, or chemical stains. If we do not complete this process, these substances can prevent the epoxy from adhering properly.
- Rinse and Dry: After the cleaning process, the floor thoroughly rinsed with water to remove any residue from the cleaning agents and then we allow the floor to dry before proceeding.
Repair Any Damage
- Fill Cracks and Holes: For this task we use an epoxy patching compound to fill any cracks or holes in the concrete ensuring the repairs are smooth and level with the rest of the floor.
- Smooth the Surface: If we still have any uneven areas or rough patches, they will be sanded down to create the smooth surface we are looking for.
Etch the Concrete
- Apply an Etching Solution: Etching opens up the pores in the concrete, allowing the epoxy to bond more effectively. We always use a commercial etching solution or a measured mixture of muriatic acid and water.
- Scrub the Surface: A stiff-bristled brush is used to work the etching solution into the concrete.
- Rinse Thoroughly: After etching, it is crucial that we rinse the floor thoroughly to remove all traces of the acid or etching solution. This will leave the floor with a slightly rough texture, similar to fine sandpaper.
Test the Surface
- Check for Dust: After the floor is dry, we can then rub a clean, dry cloth over the surface. If it picks up a lot of dust, the floor may need to be cleaned or sanded again to ensure the flawless finish.
- Adhesion Test: Apply a small amount of epoxy in a corner or inconspicuous area to test adhesion. If it adheres well, the floor is ready for the full application.
Final Cleaning
- Vacuum: Before applying epoxy, we do a final vacuum to remove any remaining dust and debris.
- Tack Cloth: We then wipe the floor with a tack cloth to pick up any fine dust particles left behind.
Prime the Floor (Optional)
- Apply a Primer: In some cases, applying an epoxy primer can enhance the adhesion and durability of the final coat. Primers also help seal the floor and provide a better bond for the epoxy.
Mask Off Areas
- Protect Surrounding Areas: Using painter’s tape to mask off areas that are not to be covered with epoxy, such as walls, baseboards, and doorways.
By carefully following these steps, we ensure that your floor is properly prepared for the epoxy application, resulting in a durable, professional finish. Proper preparation is key to a successful epoxy flooring project.
